Hollywood Hospital's new £45 million Comprehensive Cancer Centre has officially opened its doors, marking a significant milestone in our commitment to providing world-class cancer care. The state-of-the-art facility, made possible through the incredible generosity of our donors and supporters, represents the largest single investment in cancer services in the hospital's history.
"When I first walked into the new centre, I couldn't believe the difference. It feels more like a healing space than a hospital. The natural light, the artwork, even the way the treatment areas are laid out - everything helps reduce the anxiety of cancer treatment."
Cutting-Edge Technology
State-of-the-art MRI scanner in the new diagnostic suite
One of three new linear accelerators for precise radiation treatment
The new centre brings together cutting-edge treatment technology, research facilities, and patient support services under one roof. At its heart is the Advanced Radiotherapy Suite, housing three new linear accelerators that deliver precisely targeted radiation treatment with minimal impact on surrounding healthy tissue. This technology, combined with our new MRI-guided radiation planning system, allows for unprecedented accuracy in cancer treatment.
Our investment in advanced diagnostic equipment includes a dedicated PET-CT scanner and two new MRI machines specifically configured for cancer imaging. This enhanced imaging capability means we can detect cancers earlier and monitor treatment response more effectively, leading to better outcomes for our patients.
Integrated Care Approach
The welcoming reception area features natural materials and calming design elements
"Having everything in one place makes such a difference. Before, I had to visit three different buildings for various appointments. Now, I can see my oncologist, have my treatment, and attend support groups all in the same day if needed."
The centre has been designed around the principle of integrated care, bringing together all aspects of cancer treatment and support in one location. This approach significantly reduces the stress on patients who previously had to navigate between different departments and buildings for various aspects of their care.
The facility includes:
- 24 chemotherapy treatment bays with views over landscaped gardens
- Private treatment rooms for those requiring additional support
- A dedicated pharmacy unit for immediate preparation of treatments
- Consultation rooms equipped with telehealth capabilities
- A patient support centre offering psychological and practical support
Research and Innovation Hub
A key feature of the new centre is its integrated research facility, where clinical trials and research projects will be conducted alongside routine patient care. This close integration of research and treatment ensures that our patients have access to the latest therapeutic approaches and can participate in clinical trials if appropriate.
The research hub includes laboratory space for sample analysis, a clinical trials unit, and dedicated areas for collaborative research with our university partners. This investment in research infrastructure will help accelerate the development of new treatments and ensure Hollywood Hospital remains at the forefront of cancer care innovation.
Patient-Centred Design
The healing garden provides a peaceful retreat for patients and families
Light-filled waiting areas with comfortable seating and views of nature
"The children's area is amazing. My daughter actually looks forward to coming here now. The play specialists are wonderful, and the environment helps take her mind off the treatment."
A new cancer information and support centre, staffed by specialist nurses and trained volunteers, provides a welcoming space where patients and their families can access information, advice, and practical support throughout their cancer journey.
Environmental Sustainability
The new centre has been built to the highest environmental standards, featuring solar panels, ground source heat pumps, and advanced energy management systems. These initiatives will significantly reduce the centre's carbon footprint while providing long-term cost savings that can be reinvested in patient care.
Community Impact
The opening of the Comprehensive Cancer Centre represents a significant step forward in cancer care for our community. With capacity to treat an additional 2,000 patients annually, the centre will significantly reduce waiting times and ensure more patients can receive treatment closer to home.
Looking to the Future
Dr. Sarah Mitchell, Chief Executive of Hollywood Hospital Charity, said: "This centre represents the culmination of years of planning and fundraising, but more importantly, it represents hope for thousands of cancer patients and their families. We are immensely grateful to our donors and supporters who have made this possible. Their generosity will transform cancer care in our region for generations to come."
The centre will be fully operational from April 2024, with all existing cancer services transitioning to the new facility over the next month. Patients will be contacted directly about any changes to their appointment locations.
